Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that diminishes moderate to severe crow’s feet, as well as frown lines between the brows.
Repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting cause undesired creases. Botox is a FDA-approved injectable that blocks the signals from the nerves to the muscles, making them unable to contract. Because of this, the wrinkles relax and soften, providing a smooth and more refreshed appearance.
The treatment can take as little as ten minutes and requires minimal to no downtime.
What does a Botox procedure involve?
During your appointment, Dr. Moraes consults with you about your treatment goals, takes your medical history, performs a facial examination, and creates a customized treatment plan best suited for you.
Before the procedure begins, Dr. Moraes will clean and prep the areas to be treated. During the procedure, a small needle is used to inject several pinpoint amounts of Botox into the targeted areas on the face.
You may notice a pinching sensation, and the number of injections you receive depends on the extent to which the area needs to be treated.
What should I expect after treatment?
After the Botox treatment, Dr. Moraes will review a few post-care instructions with you. You may resume your daily activities shortly after the procedure. You may start noticing results from Botox in as early as 24 to 48 hours. In some cases, however, it may take up to two weeks to see full results. The treatment may last for three to four months, after which time the lines and wrinkles can return, and further treatment may be needed.
Possible side effects of Botox include but are not limited to:
- Swelling or bruising at the injection site
- Flu-like symptoms
- Eye dryness or excessive tearing
A tiny percentage of patients may also experience eyelid drooping, but this usually subsides. Botox is not recommended if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a neuromuscular condition.
